Ian hung up the phone and typed Jen’s name into Google. The search results brought up page after page of book links, blog posts and award mentions. He clicked on the top link which brought him to USA Today, where he saw that her most recent release listed in the top one hundred on the USA Today Bestsellers list. The link there took him to Amazon where he could see all of her books and their colorful covers and hundreds of reviews, most of them four and five stars. He’d had no idea she was so successful. He was surprised and proud at the same time. He just hoped she didn’t mind joining him for dinner Friday night. It might not be her idea of a good time.

He decided to go down to her office and find out. When he tapped on her door, she looked up in surprise and waved for him to come in.

“I hope I’m not interrupting?”

“Not at all. I was just stirring some sugar into my coffee and thinking about what to write next.”

“I looked you up. I didn’t realize you had so many books out and recently hit the USA Today list. That’s impressive. Was it your first time?”

Was Jen blushing? She hesitated for a moment and then said, “No, I’ve hit it before. On my last three books, actually. Still haven’t cracked the New York Times list yet, though.”

“You will, I have no doubt,” he said and meant it.

“Thank you. It’s a long-term goal of mine, someday. So, what made you decide to look me up?” Jen raised her eyebrows.

“Jim MacMurray called. He and his wife want us to come to dinner on Friday. Do you mind joining me?”

“Why me?” Jen looked confused.

“Turns out Jim MacMurray’s wife is a fan of your books. He hasn’t made a decision yet, wants to get to know us better.”

“Oh. Well, that’s good right?” A mischievous look crossed her face. “I’ll go, on one condition?”

“Okay?”

“If you close this deal, you go on vacation, or holiday, as you call it, immediately, for one week. No checking email or calling in for messages.”

Ian frowned. He’d planned on taking some time off and now was as good a time as any, but not checking in at all?

“Yes, to going on holiday. But it’s not realistic to ask me not to check in.”

“I think it is. That’s the whole point of a vacation. Unplugging completely. I’m sure Cal would be happy to cover for you and Merry can handle most of the small stuff and forward anything pressing to Cal.”

“I suppose that could work.”

“All right, then. I’d be delighted to join you for dinner Friday night.”

“Great. I owe you one. Thank you.”
